It has been a feast of mangoes this season but the highlight was this box of organic Kesar mangoes that arrived as a gift from close pal, conservationist and historian Saili Palande Datar from her own farm called Morachi aamrayi in pune. We ate them all, with the daughter feasting on a major portion and ensuring all skins go to our natural composting pit in the background. These are yum mangoes and one can still order. It was a joyful day indeed! At the Agrobiodiversity Walk with the students of Nohron Presbyterian UP School, EKH, we collected many varieties of wild edibles (like jaraiñ, jajew, jalei, jarem, laphyrnai, khliangsyiar and more. Furthermore, we were joined by young mothers, Anganwadi workers, midday meal cooks and other community members of Nohron, and together prepared interesting recipes, along with the foraged foods from the ABD walk, keeping in mind the ten food groups for an adequate diet. Mangarito (Xanthosoma sagittifolium) - I had never seen and I have not eaten it yet. It is called arrowleaf elephant ear in English, Walusa in Bolivia, Bore in Colombia and Macal in Costa Rica. Its starchy corm is edible. When I was googling it, I found out that mangarito a close relative of taioba, which I have already seen in Northern Brazil. Price is not very attractive (25 USD per kilogram 😨 which is more than meat or fine handmade cheese) but it is worth a try. Yeap, yeap, yeap, let's try mangarito! A balanced #healthy #diet is a foundation for human health. The balanced diet includes a meticulous equilibrium between #vegetables, #pulses, #meat, #fruits, and #grains. To achieve this #biological #biodiversity has to be maintained. On the contrary, biodiversity is threatened. It is heartening to notice that almost 90% of crop varieties have disappeared, more than half of the breeds of domestic #animals have been lost, in addition, we are tapping at the ocean resources at or above their sustainable limits. Indigenous #agricultural practices, medicines, traditional and locally sourced foods are disappearing at a high-speed. This has had a severe impact on the #agrobiodiversity. This loss comes at the cost of acquiring numerous health risk factors, including diabetes, obesity, malnutrition. It is the need of the hour to conserve our biodiversity to preserve our future generations. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have published a report on the biodiversity and its impact on our food and health. #Quotes by FAO’s Director-General José Graziano da Silva. “Biodiversity is critical for safeguarding global food security, underpinning healthy and nutritious diets, improving rural livelihoods, and enhancing the resilience of people and communities. Signs of prosperity: Green-terraced agricultural fields in Kibber, a village in the Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh, India. Nestled high in the Himalaya at 4,270 meters, the Spiti Valley presents a harsh environment to its inhabitants, who endure very high levels of food and nutrition insecurity. Farming in the mountains is challenging, and people have to heavily depend on a few selective crops. To add to their woes, climate change impacts are contributing to a decline in agro-biodiversity and depletion of natural resources. There are still many plant species with significant nutritional value that can be grown in the region, such as millet, sorghum, buckwheat, sea-buckthorn, and wild fruits. But they remain under-utilized, without a clear strategy for their evaluation and development. With institutional support to intensify production and diversify farming systems, the region has considerable potential for agricultural production, from agro-forestry to fruit, vegetable, and nut farming to the raising of fish, poultry, and livestock. . .
