Welcome back to Friends of 770 Woolsey Farm Fridays 🌱🌱"Show me your garden and I shall tell you what you are." -  Alfred Austin 🍃 🌱“All of the hard work is worth it when you go outside to witness seeds coming up from what you’ve planted,” he reflected. “To me that is the miracle. Watching the plant bud, leaf out, and take off from seed. It’s like poetry—it’s that kind of a feeling for me.” - Fredie Mane 🌾Farming is Poetry for Retired Marine🌾 🌿It's never too late to start something new, and Fredie Manes did just that. After a long career in the Marine Corp, Fredie and his wife Patti moved to her home state of Louisiana when he retired. They obtained some land and began farming. First lettuce and mixed greens. When a cold winter crushed a crop, they looked into high tunnels. What a great thing! Fredie was able to not only extend his growing season, but extend his crop variety and a new business: selling his crops to the locals that wanted to buy his fresh vegetables!!🌾 See the Manies story here: https://nrcs.maps.arcgis.com/apps/Cascade/index.html?appid=530a0ccb37cb4e429ff94374103a6a07 USDA Farmer's. Grains feed the world and also helped us to move from a nomadic existence to settled agriculture, a testimony to humankind's ability to innovate, evolve and create. Exploring rice over the last many years has tempted us to understand wheat some more. In the recent past, both these grains have been reviled for their adverse health and environmental impact. However, in this assessment, we completely overlook our role in how, over the last 100 years, we have completely changed the way we grow and eat these grains. We have bred these grains for productivity and responsiveness to chemical inputs disregarding the other traits, used excessive amounts of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides and grown them the year-round in areas and climates of all kinds. We process and polish them keeping in mind only an extended life span, removing the bran from rice and germ and bran from wheat ...We consume these denatured grains again after excessively processing them. Then we blame these grains for obesity, gluten intolerance, diabetes and allergies ...doesn't the blame lie with us and what we have done? Maybe it's time for us to go back to the basics of these grains Our turn to explore the landraces, the forgotten traditional varieties..with their myriad properties and benefits Opportunity to taste the distinct flavours, enjoy the fragrance and relish the difference of these varieties in our plates ... So here is to exploring, understanding and loving traditional rice and wheat... biobasics rice wheat organicrice organicwheat organicfood organicgrains eathealthy agrobiodiversity landraces indigenousvarieties

Grown in the open fields as "outside stock", Gladioli was another plant grown, cut and trucked down to the S.F. Flower mart. 👥👥👥Members of three immigrant groups from S.F., the East and South Bays banded together to bring colorful flowers to the region. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦Labor was always a challenge so family members were often seen working at the sites.
