little by little, for as long as i have had social media, i have tried to speak on and raise awareness about how unfathomably fucked up desi culture is and how risky it is that i openly run my mouth online and get into so many arguments with people in real life, as they are hell bent on maintaining an oppressive tradition. many, if not all instances include toxic and abusive family members. no matter how many achievements or moments of recognition i get, no matter how many friends or followers or customers i have, i need people to understand the vitriol i receive and the daily anxiety of being stalked or killed by a (male) member of punjabi culture because i’m some disgrace, a disappointment, a disrespectful representation of punjabi girls — when in fact, i am working hard to reclaim narratives men always wrote for us. • • part of existing in a digital space is cathartic and safe and expressive, but it’s also a built in trail of evidence that 1. i was not okay with the sexism, homophobia, classism, colorism, and racism practiced and endorsed so much by indians. 2. i was constantly fighting against it, at the risk of my own safety and sanity. and 3. if something happens to me, and if i post less or not at all for a long period of time, it will ONLY ever be because something happened to me. if i disappear or die, it will likely be because of a punjabi man who hates that i “exposed” our “sacred” culture, when so much of it is built on lies or peoples unawareness of how many women, lower caste, LGBTQ+, darker skinned, disabled, and poorer people are treated. it took a lot for me to identify as punjabi not just because white americans were racist, but because most punjabis themselves are very flawed and problematic in their culture and i am ashamed to be affiliated with its worst parts. i just like the astrology, music, food, and fashion. absolutely everything else can go fuck itself.

As children, we were so encouraged to create that our parents would stick our little Picasso-esque macaroni pieces on the fridge. As adults, we're not as encouraged. There are no arts & crafts corners in those cubicles many of us end up in, so a huge piece of our creative selves gets suppressed. So... Create that corner for yourselves! Make the space for your ENTIRE creative self to run amuck and let it show up in your art. We're willing to bet it'll be your best work. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ motivationmonday creatives creativeaf designers graphicdesigners Creativepreneur Creativeminds Creativecommunity creativeentrepreneur singer songwriter videographer artistsoninstagram blackcreators creatorsofcolor writersofcolor artistsofcolor creativesofcolor creativesofinstagram creativeprofessionals creatorowned supportacreator callingallcreators blkcreative blkcreatives indiecreator createeveryday createandcultivate creativecollective creatorsofcolor

I’m slowly learning to give myself permission to spend the time that I desire to work on making things. This choice is important - especially when I am so accustomed to just being available to accommodate external things. It has been a hard shift, and sometimes seemingly impossible to set other patterns and habits aside - but I’m committed to working every day to make it happen . . . . . karigaronartist karigaronart artistsofinstagram artiststudio artiststruggles illustration womenartists artistsofcolor koreanartist

⭐️What is your post with the highest engagement on Instagram and why do you think it is so successful? . . ⭐️I’m so excited to share this work in progress with you today!! I have been doing my own art to keep me motivated and fresh to complete my holiday painting orders and so I paint two commissions and then I indulge by painting one thing that I want to paint for myself. It feels like a guilty pleasure that way. I am the most productive when I am procrastinating other work🤣 I can’t wait to share the finished painting with you. I’d love to know what you think in the comments! It’s especially helpful for me to get comments on these types of paintings so I know if they are welcome since my page has mainly been commissioned work in the past. I am happy to be developing my style but don’t want the transition to be too jarring for everyone that likes my other works.💕💕💕 . . . . illustration workinprogess wip wippainting painting🎨 watercolorillustration illustrationpainting prettypainting animalpainting watercoloranimals watercolorfox foxes watercolordaily painteveryday paintedhair redheads_of_insta orangehair orangehairdontcare redheadsdoitbetter redheadshavemorefun beautifulgirl beautifulgirlsofinstagram artistsofig artworkshop artworkshops artistsofcolor colorfulart colorfulartwork colorfulartjoy artcolor

Was gifted this book a while back which holds a groundbreaking series of essays from various textile historians about modern art with materials and textiles as medium. I first read one or two of these works when I was in advanced weaving with johnpaulmorabito in fiberandmaterialstudies_saic . This book is an excellent source for understanding contemporary craft and modern art, but particularly in understanding fiber-based mediums in a multitude of ways. This book introduces you to a number of brilliant artists as well, many who were groundbreaking in their concept and aesthetics. I love this piece so much! It was in my living room for a while and transformed it into the most welcoming, cosy and tranquil room.... I do miss it but will force me to paint another to replace it. . Today is the last day to check out my new installation at the Esther Massry Gallery - “The Persistence of Spirit” acknowledges, remembers and honors Black youth who were victims of racially motivated violence, specifically those taken since the murder of Trayvon Martin in 2012. Like the innumerable children killed as acts of terror during the Civil Rights era, these recent deaths have propelled the fight for freedom. And that is why, by virtue of their martyrdom, these individuals are saints themselves. This work uplifts, inspires and offers hope through collective offerings and the invocation of our own loved ones past. It has come alive thanks to community participation and heartfelt offerings which include objects of protection, remembrance, good luck, healing, comfort and joy. Many many thanks to all who have participated in the creation of this new work. __ makingart BelcherHollowForge africandiaspora capitalregionny folktaleseries artistsofcolor womanartists blackwomenartists storytelling memory shrine memorial aPeoplesJourney justbeyondtheriver aNationsHistory crossings freedomtrail weshallovercome storytellers socialjusticeart artandactivism freedom daeshadevnharris blacklivesmatter

Check out the new article “Eye Opener” by Danelle Morton from the University of Puget Sound featuring Karen Jenkins-Johnson as she speaks about her lifelong commitment to elevating artists of color. “In one way, gallery work is advocacy,” Karen says. “I see the pathway to feature artists on a bigger scale, beyond the limitations that others have put on them. One of the things my parents taught me is that only I can allow others to put limitations on me. I don’t allow that, and I don’t allow others to put limitations on my artists.” The article offers a rare insight into the path of a gallerist, who uses her business mind to fight for equality in cultural narratives. Being the first African American gallery to exhibit at Paris Photo and Art Basel (Switzerland, Miami), Jenkins Johnson Gallery breaks the glass ceiling by building the careers of people of color, including curators, artists, writers and cultural workers. You can also find information on five artists that Karen believes deserve more attention in today's art world. These artists include: Ming Smith, Enrico Riley, Jae and Wadsworth Jarrell, Aubrey Williams and Thornton Dial. . .
