What I’m getting at here is this: diets might look promising at the start. They might even seem realistic or — dare I say — exciting. But there’s always a cost - a caveat. They work until they don’t. Until your body’s physiology gets too smart and begins to rebel against the intentional starvation/depletion. Until your mind gets too worried about counting calories or macros. Until you find yourself passing on your own birthday cake. There’s more to life & good health than weight loss. . . Who needs to hear this message? Last weekend, celebrating my Dad’s birthday.... I realized how truly astounding it is that I don’t worry about what I order at restaurants anymore. I order what sounds amazing and I eat however much I want ♥️ 🍽 ...(surprisingly I use to eat a LOT more food when I use to restrict......funny huh?? 😉💗💗 • For 15 years I ordered nothing but bland salads (with dressing on the side) or salmon and vegetables anytime I went to a restaurants, all the while craving things like burgers, fries, and dessert. And you know what? ..... I was NEVER happy and I STILL always struggled with my body/my weight because of all that stress. • Now, my body is slowly but surely coming back to balance and my weight is coming down to where IT wants to be 🙂. Planning meals can be self care. . I hear from patients all the time that they feel like planning meals means dieting. It doesn’t have to! . Planning out meals and being prepared means that you are taking care of yourself, making sure you have food available that you like to eat and that will nourish your body. . After I gave up dieting, I seemed to run out of things to talk about with my friends, my family, and my coworkers. It was like every conversation was about what diet someone was doing, what exercise they were doing to lose weight, and which foods were healthy and which foods were not. I felt painfully awkward like they all noticed I wasn't participating anymore. It was like their eyes around me as we shared a meal together and I was eating carbs for the first time in years. This was one of the hardest parts of my journey. . Have you ever felt like that? If so you're not alone. It's partially because while we're dieting a lot of what we talk about is diets to the people in our lives are used to bringing it up with us... But it's also because everybody we know is experiencing the same effects of diet culture. . Luckily at the time I was working with a #HAES nutritionist who helps me overcome these awkward moments. I felt painfully silent as I had nothing to add to the conversation and I didn't know how to pivot to another subject. . So if any of you are going through that now just know that it gets better. A year later I never struggle with what to talk about and it's a lot easier for me when people around me do bring up dieting. .

⁣I felt on top of the world, little did I know in this moment, that I was about to come tumbling down, hard. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ I wouldn’t be able to sustain this body I worked so hard for, which would start my unhealthy relationship with food and my body. I would feel like a total failure because I couldn’t chase my dreams without having this body back. No one wanted a washed up fitness competitor on the cover of their magazine. How would I still influence others while I was a fraud and couldn’t even do myself what I was telling them to do. I could go on and on...⠀ ⠀ ⠀ There are so many things I would go back and tell this version of myself. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⭐️Be yourself. Stop trying to be someone you are not just to try to impress people who don’t matter. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⭐️Stop trying to appear perfect. Show your flaws and struggles. It will inspire people more than you know. It’s ok to live imperfectly. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⭐️Life may seem awesome now, but it’s not real. It’s a distraction from what you don’t want to deal with. You will fall down anyway, but you’ll find a way to stand back up and be a better version of yourself for going through it. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⭐️Sit with your feelings. Learn from them. Spending hours in the gym and perfectly planning out your meals is a good distraction, but it won’t last forever. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⭐️Learn to love yourself. If you can’t love yourself and embrace the way you’re made, when you’re in amazing shape, you definitely won’t be able to when the weight comes back on. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⭐️Be your own person and find your on voice. Stop trying to be what you think everyone wants you to be and just do you. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⭐️Stop caring so much about what others think. Those who judge you are just deaing with their own insecurities and it has nothing to do with you. Those who truly matter will never judge you anyway. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⭐️You will figure out that being present with the ones who really matter will fill your heart and make you feel whole more than any magazine cover, fitness award, looking a certain way, or any external recognition. You have everything you need from the ones who love you no matter what.⠀

I used to struggle with disordered eating. A common misconception is that this always starts with hating your body, but I had a different experience. For me, it started because I felt like my life was falling apart. I felt out of control and stressed. Around the same time, I picked up diet book and it created this perfect storm. I immediately found a new sense of control and I started setting goals around my weight and calorie intake. I picked up the wrong book at the wrong time and it ended up being so much more harmful than I ever imagined.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I don’t want to say that this wasn’t body related- because I did have a distorted view of my body, but the core was control. This whole experience played a big part in wanting to build my own coaching practice- because I WISH something like this would have come around for me back then. It would have changed everything. 🌿 Wait, you mean to tell me that weight loss DID NOT improve disease outcomes for fat folks with type 2 diabetes?! . 🌿If you read an article in the newspaper that presents the relationship between weight and disease outcome as “causal” or if the word “fact” is thrown around in there too, be cautious. . 🌿 Correlation does not imply causation, and when we break down the plethora of research on weight and health outcomes, the ONLY thing we can say for certain is this issue is far too complicated to be reduced to single variable cause and effect. There’s just too many confounding (conflicting) variables at play. Can you feel appreciation for the absence of a headache?⠀ ⠀ Can you list 10 things that are NOT wrong right now with your body?⠀ ⠀ I'll start:⠀ ⠀ I don't have paralysis in any part of my body :)⠀ I don't have pain anywhere in my body at this moment.⠀ I don't have any missing fingernails or toenails.⠀ I don't have an illness (that I know about).⠀ I don't have greasy hair right now. ⠀ I don't have hayfever right now.⠀ My eyes are not blind.⠀ My ears are not deaf. ⠀ My skin is not burned or scarred or bitten. ⠀ My eyelashes haven't completely fallen out yet.⠀ ⠀ By the way - when I say what's 'not wrong' - I'm not implying that if any of these things were happening to me right now that it would mean they are wrong. It was all “wrong” and something that surely if I could fix, would make me impermeable to sadness or any negative emotion. 🙄 But what if those aren’t actually “flaws”? Do you find you keep overeating? . Especially when you’re starting to feel really good and happy? When you’re seeing weight loss and feeling good in your body? . There's an equation for this... . Isolated eating = overeating = binging . Isolated thinking = negative thoughts = self-negating, over-analyzation (i.e. procrastination, perfectionism = lack of self-love) . Isolated being = anxiety = depression . Think of your mind like a thermostat - being overweight, even if only 5 pounds, is your comfort zone, even if you know all the information and have tried every diet, your default “thermostat setting, i.e. your “comfort zone” will bring you back to it’s typical setting, because it does not know the unknown. . This new way of living where weight loss is easy, and you feel comfortable and happy in your body is unknown and foreign to your system of beliefs. . When you decide you want to make your health a priority and get really excited, or you find a solution on how to get there, take action now. Your critter brain is a powerful force and you will talk yourself out having it REALLY fast.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ If we just followed through, we could create remarkable momentum and results- amazing results that would impact sooo much. Sounds exciting huh? I’m sure it also sounds a little scary. Not only is it factually incorrect, (it doesn’t come close to understanding how our bodies, appetites, body size, and metabolism actually work), but it’s also actively harmful. The amount of eating disorders that go undetected and untreated (and even worse: encouraged/applauded) because of the way we all assume eating disorders “look” is a crisis. You can be fat and have anorexia. You can be in a bigger body and be malnourished. Under eating does not always result in the skinny body we think it does. But there is a mass assumption is that body size is all about calories in vs calories out. _______________________________________________________ No matter how you slice it… it’s wrong. _______________________________________________________ ***if this is hard for you to wrap your head around, take a moment to consider: If you have an easy time losing weight or staying thin, the big mistake is assuming that if ~everyone~ did what you did, they would be/look the same, but that is genuinely not how it works.***

I’m old. . I’m 32, which is like, 150 in Instagram years, right? . Any who, there are some potential big changes coming for me in the next few months, which is SUPER exciting, but it’s also a bit terrifying, and I’m kind of sitting here in a mental bubble waiting for it to pop. . So naturally, my overthinking self has done a lot of reflecting over the past few days. . Since my son was born almost 5 years ago, a lot of things have changed for me, but the biggest change has been the way that I look at life. . I see so many young people on here going down the same self destructive path that I went down under the guise of health/wellness/“cutting”/weightlifting/fitness. It’s frustrating. And heart breaking. . It’s crazy how much disordered and damaging behavior you notice when you’ve broken yourself out of the grips that years of chronic dieting and fitness obsession can have on you. But in the same breath, had you told my younger self that what I was doing was disordered I would have probably laughed at you. . When you’re deep in it, you can’t see that what you’re doing is causing more harm that it is good. It’s hard to realize that a lot of what we see on here is really, really messed up. It’s a life thief. . Listen, when we take up too much headspace on any one thing, we’re unable to use that space for better, more fulfilling things - the LIFE stuff. . I never realized how much headspace I was virtually WASTING on things that, in the end, aren’t going to matter. . So I’ll leave it at this: what are you focusing on? . And, is it worth it?

Have you ever heard negative feedback, criticism or unkind words and began to believe it was true? . I was hiking with my friend in Malibu and we had this enlightened discussion about coaching (we’re both coaches) and how detrimental it can be, to hire or even follow the wrong coach, guide, therapist, psychic, medium, influencer... . If one of those "experts" determines we need help or have something wrong with us, our negative mind will quickly begin to own this belief as its truth and create it as our reality. . It’s a tricky space to give someone power over you. I always, always tell my clients, you have to listen to yourself first. I teach them how to hear their inner guidance and how to trust it, while we build their belief in themselves. . Don't buy into someone else's negative picture of you. You are perfect. There is nothing wrong with you, and everything right with you. You must believe that before you can truly reach your goals. 🙌 . Have you ever had an experience where you felt good until someone pointed out something in you they felt was not right and you began to believe it? Maybe you were told you were bad at sports or not good at math, when in reality you were good at both...Or have you had a bad coaching experience?
