You can't go far without hearing about someone's keto diet, or seeing keto products on store shelves and in restaurants (at least I can't, I live in Los Angeles 🙄). The body uses glucose for energy. Going keto means you're switching to using ketones instead. A keto diet is higher in fat than protein and carbs (about 75%, 20% and 5% respectively). A ketogenic diet has been studied as beneficial for epilepsy in children. It's being studied for other health benefits. Long term effects haven't been determined. Truth 💣... There is evidence that keto CAN make skin rashes WORSE. Here's why: 👉The metabolic switch that takes place creates inflammation and stress, root causes of skin rashes. 👉High fat diets increase gut permeability (leaky gut), an underlying problem in people with skin rashes. 👉High fats diets increase production of sebum in your skin, leading to acne. 👉Your good gut bugs need fiber to survive, which comes from complex carbs. If you're not eating them, your gut microbiome (where 80% of your immune system is) will be negatively impacted creating gut dysbiosis and immune system dysregulation. I see this in 100% of my skin clients. If your skin rashes have gotten worse since going keto, or if you've developed other health problems, it's time to stop dieting and start nourishing your body. That means eating a diet of whole, real foods, that does not exclude foods, food groups and categories of foods. Of course processed junk foods and simple sugary carbs are not on the included list (sorry not sorry🤷‍♀️), and are major skin rash triggers. I'm sorry guys!  I know ... I've been lost in the abyss. . Truth is, life has become that much more of a juggling dance ever since I've been initiated into this new life of motherhood.  I see other mom's on this platform "crushing it," after just 3 weeks of even having a baby, and instead of feeling envious and like I should be doing so much more, I've accepted the fact that that's just not my flow. . And there is no way that I could possibly compare my reality to anyone else's, because everyone has a different life and story to share.  We're almost 16 months into this and I'm still figuring it all out. . But the good thing is that life has become so much easier.  It still has it's challenges, but we're settling quite nicely into the flow of things. . Oh yes, there’s nothing more satisfying on a chilly day than the constant, radiant heat of a well ventilated wood stove. ⁣ But here’s the thing- to have it working optimally- the pipes need to be clean and clear of buildup or else it smokes, burns inefficiently or doesn’t heat well. ⁣ We always prepare for the wood burning season with a good chimney sweep and scrape the wood stove walls. If we don’t practice good creosote prevention- the walls gum up.⁣ This made me think about our bodies. Our “pipes”, the gut, need to be clean and clear of gunk or we burn fuel inefficiently too. I know some folks like to do “cleanses”, which are ok I guess, but eventually- the gut gums up again requiring yet another round of cleansing. ⁣ I’ve found over the last 3 1/2 years that how, what and when I eat coupled with premium nutritional supplementation that my gut health and function has improved greatly erasing the need for periodic “cleansing”. Swipe for a surprise 🐶 ⁣ ⁣ I was missin my Mexican food, so I decided to whip up these yummy burritos courtesy of foodforlifebaking brown rice tortillas! I stuffed them with chicken, brown rice, avocado, and zoodles. As you can tell by my dog’s reaction and failed attempt to grab a bite, they smelled gooooooood. And they taste even better.⁣ ⁣ Now onto the sappy part of my post: I decided I’d dedicate a piece of today’s caption to my sweet pup, Chase. Chase has been by my side for ten years now, and I couldn’t have asked for a sweeter, more loving dog. He busts my bedroom door open in the mornings to wake me up, and he is always the first one to greet me at the bottom of the staircase when I come home. When I was receiving IV therapy, he laid patiently on the ground next to the couch I was laying on just to keep me company and stay close. Dogs really are such a gift to so many families, and I’m so appreciative of mine. He’s getting older and not feeling as well as he used to, and we have a difficult decision to make pretty soon. But for now, I’m just soaking up all the time I have left with him and reminding myself of how lucky I am to have grown up with such a wonderful dog. ❤️

Meat, Tomato, and Mozzarella Stuffed Zucchini Cups Serves 7 Per serving 1 Lean protein 3 vegetables 1 ¼ condiment Ingredients: 2 large zucchini or yellow squash, total weight 1 1/2 lbs Olive oil spray 1/2 cup finely chopped leeks 1 green pepper, finely chopped 2 T finely minced fresh garlic 1 ¼ lb. ground beef (10% fat or less) 13 oz. ground turkey (10% fat or less) 1 tsp. Spike seasoning (optional) 2 C no sugar added tomato-basil pasta sauce such as Rao’s Marinara 2 cups low-fat mozzarella Instructions: Preheat oven to 350F. Chop leeks and green pepper. Cook leeks and pepper in olive oiled sprayed nonstick pan, until just starting to soften. Add minced garlic and saute about 1 min. more, being careful not to brown the garlic. Remove the leeks, pepper, and garlic mixture to a bowl. Crumble in the ground beef & ground turkey, season with Spike seasoning, and cook over medium heat until the meat is well browned. Tilt pan to see if there is any extra fat, (remove fat) then stir cooked vegetables and garlic back into the meat. Add sauce and simmer until the mixture has thickened and liquid has cooked off, about 10 min. While meat cools, cut zucchini into 2 inch thick slices, discarding ends. Use a sharp spoon or melon baller to hollow out a cup in each zucchini slice, leaving just over 1/4 inch of zucchini flesh. Be careful not to get too close to the skin or the cups will leak liquid when they cook. Spray baking sheet with nonstick spray and stand up zucchini cups, open end up. Stir 1 1/2 cups grated cheese into the cooled meat mixture , then spoon the meat-cheese mixture into zucchini cups, pressing down with the spoon and mounding it up a little over the top of the zucchini. Bake zucchini cups for 20 min., then remove from oven and use remaining cheese to top each one with a generous pinch of cheese. Put back in oven and bake 10-15 minutes more, until zucchini is slightly soft when pierced with a fork and cheese is melted and lightly browned. I really try to limit the amount of candy and treats my kids consume, but let's be honest, they still eat WAY more than what someone twice their size should consume over the holidays. But I'll focus on what we use most. Digestzen essential oil is used most often for tummy troubles.
