-• I talk about the importance of sleep in at least 90% of my posts. I started to feel like a broken record a long time, but I won’t be stopping any time soon (or ever) because it's truly THAT important.
So if you think that you can skate by skimping on your sleep, let this be a wake up call that unless you are superhuman, you can’t.
If you’re hoping to find a magic fat loss pill, look no further than your sleep quantity and quality. Here’s why:
Have you ever gotten a shitty night’s sleep and the next day you were completely ravenous? You can thank your hunger hormones, leptin and ghrelin, for that. Leptin decreases as you lose fat, signaling the body to burn fewer calories and increase hunger. But a lack of sleep ALSO decreases leptin, making it a double whammy. At the same time, grehlin increases, making you hungry and more likely to eat. Getting enough sleep helps keep these hormones better regulated, making hunger less of an issue.
Sleep helps reduce cravings for high calorie foods and makes it easier to make healthy food choices. You might say you have more willpower when you aren’t sleep deprived, but whatever the case, it can make staying in a calorie deficit way easier.
Exercise isn’t nearly as important as nutrition when it comes to fat loss, but it definitely helps. The more energized you are, the more intensity you can give to your workouts. Whether that’s lifting heavier, doing more reps, or not gassing out halfway through. It also helps you stay active outside of the gym, so you can burn more calories throughout the day.
Recovery is super important for maintaining your muscles mass when in a fat loss phase. If you aren’t getting enough sleep, your recovery will suffer, meaning you will be more sore and less energized for your next workout. You’ll also be more likely to lose muscle.
