Dry, mainly Carricante grape with a few other indigenous varieties thrown in. The wine looks and feels aged (it’s had 5 months on the lees in steel tank), it has a sweetness on the nose, also chamomile flowers, fennel; the palate is gorgeous - balanced weight, just off-dry, attractive juicy pear flavours, citrus, with a slight salinity and dry stone finish. It’s not got some of the vivacity of other Etna wines but it’s quality and worth seeking out. Impressive given this Barolo producer only bought the land in 2016.

⁣2012 Radikon ‘Jakot’ White Blend 500ml - $79⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ One of the pioneering families for the now quite popular macerated wine movement, the 'Jakot' has a deep apricot hue, fresh and well balanced with savoury notes of stone fruit and almonds. The wine goes through extensive (3 months) on skins during maceration and the family has made this style of wine since 1995 after Stanislao decided to return to the style his grandfather followed; one of extended maceration periods, the use of oak barrels, manual harvesting and extended barrel ageing. Tried something new tonight in the is Pinot Bianco from Alto Adige, Italy. Light bodied and citrusy, i taste notes of pear and green apple bolstered by floral and grassy/straw notes like honeysuckle and chamomile. Lightly oaked, there's a funky, almost yeasty finish that gives it a roundness that many light and acidic wines often lack. This Terlano Pinot Bianco's high salinity made it the perfect companion for the salmon i baked tonight since it cut through the fat and highlighted the citrus. I seasoned it with lemon and cajun and chose basmati rice and a simple arugula + cabbage salad with pepitos and cranberries to accompany it. I experimented with making a greek yogurt and poppyseed dressing that turned out pretty damn good! The wine and the dressing went super well together! Something about that creamy, fermented yogurt just saaaannnggg to that yeasty funk i mentioned earlier. Impressed highly with both the wine and my cooking/pairing skills. 8/10

Tenuta delle Terre Nere, Etna Rosso 2017 C'est tellement ridicule à quel point c'est bon du Nerello Mascalese, j'peux pas croîre qu'on en entende pratiquement jamais parler. C'était avec le 2016 de ce même vin que j'ai pour ma part découvert ce cépage, et l'Etna par le fait même. J'essaie d'éviter les envolés poétiques un peu trop mystiques mais j'dois dire que ça GOÛTE son terroir. On a du fruit rouge mûr et séché à la fois, comme si on avait mélangé des fraises séchées à des cerises au brandy, on a une petite trace de paprika fumé, ainsi que du clou de girofle. Corps léger presque aérien, acidité bien vive et tanins très subtils. Ça a quand même 14% d'alcool mais ça aide à concentrer le nez sans ammener de noseburn incongru. Joe Raisin a déjà fait la joke sur son blogue, mais c'est du jus de volcan. A blend of Groppello, Sangiovese, Barbera and Marzemino grapes. Two of which (Groppello & Marzemino) I'd never heard of prior to. The grapes are picked and left to dry for two months in small crates, in a climate controlled room. They are then put into French oak barriques and left to mature for twenty four months. The wine came sauntering out to notes of cherry, plum, leather and black pepper. It was immediately making a statement. "I'm here, and I'm delicious." The fruit, tannins, alcohol and acidity all merging together harmoniously in a way that mad it immediately enjoyable, then elevated, with food.
