Dying for someone is the ultimate form of love. It's the pinnacle of self-sacrifice. And it's exactly what Jesus did for us. He died so that we could have eternal life. He loves us so much that He gave Himself up so that our debt for our sin didn't fall on our own shoulders. And on top of everything He did for our sakes, Jesus called Himself our friend. He's not just a savior who gave us the gift of life and then removed Himself from our presence. He's a savior who also wants a personal relationship with us. And in light of His sacrifice, He calls us to also be sacrificial. Most of us won't face the literal decision of laying down our lives for another person. But we will have to constantly decide to put others first. Loving people means considering them above ourselves. It means accepting our own lack for the sake of giving to someone else in need. It means lowering our desires to elevate our neighbors. And that requires laying down our wills to pursue what God tells us to do. Loving people is hard. People are broken and messy and difficult. But so are we, and God loves us. He set the bar, and He will help us reach it. Love doesn't always come naturally, but it is always possible, and it's always the right choice.
