Why we need to weigh food. If you're tracking your macros, following them every day but not seeing progress you could be under estimating your amounts. As you can see, one table spoon could mean different amounts to different people. 🛏🌌💤 • Climbing into bed- my NEW bed- in my Uni apartment, and it’s time to embark on the recovery that I have delayed and avoided for so long. • 1- I commit to reaching and maintaining my body’s set point weight. Therefore, I commit to gaining weight until I reach that point. My body knows when to plateau it’s weight gain WITHOUT interference of any kind on my part. 2- I commit to unrestricted eating. I no longer ALLOW myself any kind of fear foods, macro related rules, ‘good and bad’ foods or calorie limits. I will follow Tabitha Farrars safety net eating approach- having a minimum intake of 3 PUB SIZED meals and continuous snacking- REGARDLESS of my hunger. My goal is weight gain, and that goal must be achieved whether I feel hungry for it or not. 3- I commit to stopping all compensatory behaviours. For me, that’s NO more lower level movement. No standing, no walking, no pacing. I will not engage in any kind of action with the intent to purge calories. • Basically, I commit to full recovery. I am going to fake it till I make it. I’m going head first, all in to this recovery effort because the ‘low and slow’ approach has just kept me in YEARS of active anorexia. E.g. Challenge here, compensate there. Gain weight, lose weight. Pretend I’m trying, give up all together. Hospital, hospital, hospital...NO more. • First night of a new life. I’m scared. I’m recovering by myself, and for myself. But I WILL make this happen. Continued. Prior to getting the formula, Hudson was drinking 1000ml of my expressed breast milk a day. This was exhausting and stressful as I could not keep up with expressing enough for him. When speaking to King's dietitians, they confirmed that Hudson was drinking this amount as nature's way of making up for the lack of vitamins he was getting. On Monday of this week I went to my local GP to pick up Hudson's prescription for the formula. Something I thought would be simple. Unfortunately they did not have his prescription as the post had not yet arrived and for some prehistoric reason they don't accept prescriptions via email. I returned to the GP practice on Tuesday and again the prescription hadn't arrived. On top of this I needed to order repeat prescriptions of some of Hudson's other medication. Again, another hurdle, supposedly there was no record on file of any of his medication. In addition to this, the dispensary could not provide me with any syringes to administer his medication. They were also unable to set Hudson up for online repeat prescriptions as he's under 16 (something I was hoping I could do just to make life a little simpler). I cried in frustration and asked to speak to the doctor The doctor was amazing and compassionate and managed to sort everything out for Hudson and I. I have also just got a text from the pharmacist to say that all of my son's medication is ready - hurrah! We have also just returned from Addenbrooke's Hospital as Hudson had a cardiology appointment. One of the best bits of news today - he weighs 9lb 2oz and is tracking his own centile! So from being an emotional wreck for two days, I'm now on cloud nine 😍 Ps. Please do not take any of this as lack of gratitude for the NHS. if your breakfast isn’t this big you’re doing it wrong 😂😉 - as some of you know (because i posted it and sort of explained it on my story) my parents told me just last night that i might be going to an ed residential care place in the next couple of months. they have put me on the waiting list because the facility only has 12 beds. they said they have decided this because i haven’t been gaining any weight (and possibly even losing) and my heart is still in a very fragile place. they said they know that i am trying, they can see that. recently i’ve decreased my intake because of my lack of appetite, and i’ve found it so much harder to eat when i’m full constantly. my parents and i decided that i have to add 3%+ milk back into my diet, as well as lots of smoothies and fruit juice. this is so scary because this has always been a no from my eating disorder. but it’s never been a no from me. and i’m done letting my eating disorder control me and speak for me. i want my turn. from now on i’m going to speak for myself, and not let me eating disorder take the spotlight. i mean, this is very hard because half the time i can’t tell who’s who. I'm going to pause on Hudson's intial journey at the hospital and just talk for a moment about the past few days. Nobody warns you or gives you any advice when you leave hospital as to how things look like at home with a newborn that requires a little extra care. Hudson is on 6 lots of medication that are administered 9 times a day in total. When we were discharged from hospital we were given all of the medication he required and a lesson on how to administer them. In addition to the above medication, Hudson is now on a special formula which King's Hospital prescribed last week. In short, the formula is made up mostly of a type of fat that doesn't require bile to be broken down. Children with Alagille Syndrome cannot properly absorb fats and fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, and K) which may mean growth deficiencies and failure to thrive. Some of the children require an NG tube to try and help them to gain weight. Some children have been known to weigh as little as 11lb at 8 months old. Since King's Hospital have prescribed the new formula we have spent the past week weaning Hudson onto it. Too much makes him sick and too little means he will not grow. You can imagine how I have felt each time he has been sick. I have cried a lot. I had some hate slide into my DM‘s the other day. But it was sneaky, it was the kind that is passive aggressive and 𝘢𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 seems nice until you realize how it made you feel. ⁣ ⁣ It said: ⁣ ⁣ “Hey! I love watching your stories and posts, but I’m not sure how you can help other people when you’ve gained weight lately.”⁣ ⁣ What. ⁣ ⁣ 𝘖𝘬𝘢𝘺. ⁣ ⁣ My knee-jerk reaction was to send some profanity-laden response. But then I realized, the fact that I 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 don’t have a perfect handle on my emotional eating 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 equips me 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐲 to help others work through their own struggles with similar things. ⁣ ⁣ You see, I use food as a 𝐝𝐫𝐮𝐠. I eat when I’m happy, sad, celebrating, + pretty much everything in between. There’s nothing like the short term high that comes from sitting on the couch with a big bowl of ice cream mixed in with an entire package of Oreos when I’m feeling crappy. The emotional roller coaster that I’ve been on for the past few months has caused me to gain about 15 pounds. I have remained consistent with my workouts, but it’s also a well-known fact that 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘣𝘢𝘥 𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘵.⁣ ⁣ To be honest, I wasn’t even going to address this. I was going to squash it down deep and let those words from an anonymous person on Instagram eat away at me. But then, I decided to flip the script. ⁣ ⁣ I believe if we face things head-on and bring them into the light, they no longer have 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 over us.⁣ ⁣ So, yes, anonymous person on Instagram. I have gained weight. And you know what? It’s all right. I no longer allow the scale to dictate the value I place on myself. And while you did hit a nerve, this time it is propelling me into positive action versus a downward spiral.⁣ ⁣ I may be 15 pounds heavier than I was a few months ago, but I am equally me whether I am a size 12 or a size 8.
