If you have a vulva, you’ve probably been encouraged to take certain measures to “keep it clean” Conversations around vaginal hygiene are dripping in shame and fear of bad odors, and being dirty. So let’s set the record straight once and for all on what is safe and not safe to do when caring for your vulva: ⠀⠀ 🚫Douching: This can be harmful because Douching removes both bad and good bacteria. The body is very intelligent and knows exactly how to balance itself out. You've probably heard that the vagina is a self cleaning oven and it is true! Washing with warm water and a mild soap on the outer portions of the vulva it great but never attempt to clean inside the vaginal opening. . ⠀⠀ 🚫Vaginal soaps: If you have summer eve or anything similar in your shower right now you may want to consider throwing them out. Vaginal soaps are often drying, unnecessary and can cause yeast infections. Avoid any and all scented soaps and instead opt for an unscented mild soap to use on the vulva (labia, mons pubis but never inside your vagina) . ⠀⠀ ✅Balanced eating: This is a tricky one, but it’s kind of true that you are what you eat. Lots of people have heard the rumor about pineapples, and that eating them makes the vulva taste sweeter. While this is not entirely true (Vaginas are never gonna taste like candy, its just impossible...) eating a balanced diet can help keep vaginal odor to a minimum (See my stories today for five foods that are good for your vagina) . ⠀⠀ ✅Check your pH balance: Vaginas require a pH between 3.8 and 4.5. Your doctor can test this at an annual visit or you can order a kit and easily test at home if you are concerned that your pH may be off. For today’s home workout I modified yesterday’s workout from crossfitrebuild. . Their workout was the hero WOD “Danny”: 20 minute AMRAP 30 Box Jump, 24" 20 Push Press, 115# 30 Pull-ups . Here’s my modified version: 20 minute AMRAP 30 step-ups (15 per leg) 20 elevated push-ups 30 band pulls (15 per arm) . I had zero abdominal discomfort during or after this workout (this was the symptom I had when I pushed it too hard previously). Push-ups on the ground cause me to hold my breath at this point so I did them elevated. With every movement I really focused on my BREATHING and NOT constantly squeezing my glutes to prevent excess strain on my pelvic floor. . Note: returning to exercise at any point post-partum is very individualistic. Just because this works for me right now, doesn’t necessarily mean your body is ready for this. Please book in with a pelvic floor physio and follow the guidance of a pregnant/ post-partum coach for advice (I would suggest myself, but I’m currently on mat leave!) . I go in on Tuesday next week to have a fluids check done. . Then, we go from there. . Could be totally fine! Could be something we need to address. I know I wrote before a little bit about my experience with cancer, and how I wasn’t able to really articulate how I felt.. and I realize now that’s because I was still in the thick of things, I hadn’t yet been able to take a step back and process everything that had happened 🙈 . Almost 2 months ago now, I went for my first ultrasound/mammo since last year. Others in the community talk about “scanxiety”, but I had no anxiety whatsoever going in to the appointment – I didn’t even bother to mention it to my friends or family because it was just another appointment, and those were nothing new. . It was going fine, and once she was finished, the tech went to check with the radiologist, which is standard protocol. But when she came back with the radiologist I knew things were not fine. There was a lump in the affected breast, and the border was irregular. . I barely remember a word he said because my mind went into overdrive and started spinning. How is this happening again? Why is this happening again??? And so I went through the motions again.. Waiting for the biopsy appointment.. Waiting for the biopsy results.. Sitting uncomfortably with the unknown 😶 . Turns out it was benign, just a fibro adenoma. My friends and family were ecstatic.. and I told them how it was such a relief.. When in reality I felt no relief from this news whatsoever and quite the opposite, found myself spiraling into depression faster than I thought possible. Before that day, I honestly wasn’t worried about the cancer coming back.. . Depression is not new to me.. I’ve spent a lot of my life being depressed to some extent or other. What surprised me though was how hard and fast it hit, even though I’ve been using all the tools in my belt! I eat right, I get outside and move my body every day, get quality sleep, working through my feelings as they arise, pray, meditate, energy work, surround myself with amazing people.. the list goes on! . Ok ladies so yes the heal is real but it doesn’t come in a perfect little package with a “IG” filter on it. The heal takes work and months sometimes years of recovery. I thought I was going to wake up in recovery feeling like a million bucks but I woke up in pain from surgery. That’s real. It’s been 10 weeks. I’m still healing. Some real things have gotten better. But yesterday I was hit with a real dose of anxiety. I saw my therapist, I worked out with my trainer and even went on a walk with my dogs because I didn’t want to let the anxiety take over. I kept myself busy to avoid having to take my anxiety medication. I could have easily fixed the situation by taking a little tiny pill but I pushed through because I knew I could yesterday. But if I couldn’t have I would have taken that pill and then felt guilty later. That’s real. Why do we do that to ourselves ladies? We are strong but we are not Immune to all. Do I want to take anxiety meds? No. I am I happy I was able to work through it. Yes but I also recognize that sometimes I need help. Ladies don’t put yourself in a box, all our experiences will be different but as long as we support each other a long the way we will make it. It is oily, heavy and has mild hot potency, Badam or Almond oil is known for pacifying vata and kapha doshas and for aggravating pitta dosha. It moisturizes the skin and helps in psoriasis, eczema and other forms of dermatitis. It is good for dryness. However, if you are prone to acne - not the best oil. The only people who should not consume almonds are those with high Pitta in the blood.
